7 December 2011

Apologies for the extra-long mid-week message. You know what it's like right before the holidays -- everyone remembers they've got something to say.

So if you've got something to say, send it along and I'll add it to the roll call!

Comments, questions, etc? Just ask...

And More...

More Scholarship News
Center School college counselor Barbara Quintana will be speaking to senior classes this week about scholarship possibilities. Check the latest additions to her list here if you've got a child making post-high school plans.

Center School Ski Bus-Is Friday Better?
We don't have enough kids for the ski bus on Wednesday nights, and are testing the waters to see if Friday is better for more kids. The ski bus would go on Fridays for 6 weeks beginning January 13, leaving at 3:30 pm and returning at 10:30-11:00 pm. Bus only: $150; Bus and lift ticket: $330. Rentals are available for an additional cost. Please email me by 12/9 if your student is interested in the ski bus on Friday. Julie Vergeront, jvergeront@yahoo.com, 206-459-1862.

Travel Safe
Mayor McGinn and former NASCAR Champion Driver Ross Bentley will lead the way on a walk and rally Saturday 10 December to promote pedestrian safety downtown during the holidays. Seattle Public Schools is sponsoring a inter-school contest alongside the event -- the school that brings the most people (students and others) to the rally wins a pizza part. All participants will be entered to win a $500 cash prize, which will make someone's holidays just that much more merry. Look here for the fancy flyer, and meet up at the Westlake Center Big Tree at 10:30 am.

Student Matinees -- Seven Keys to Baldpate
Alongside the evening performances on 12-13 December, the Center School drama production of the George M Cohan classic will run for students during the school day on Tuesday 13 December and Thursday 15 December. Students with Humanities, Poetry, or Math during 6th period will see the play on Tuesday -- students with Science, Film, IEP, Animation, Spanish, or TA assignments will see the play on Thursday. If your student is in 9th grade, they will take the Winter MAP test on the day they do not see the play -- all other students will be dismissed at 1:05 if they are not in the audience. Tuesday will still be a 2-4-6 day, and Thursday will still be a 1-3-5 day -- both days will start at 8:30.

CSCA in December
Center School Community Association (CSCA) meeting on Tuesday 13 December from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the school. The CSCA is the Center School Parent-Teacher-Staff-Student Association (PTA). Please join us. It's a great way to learn more about what's going on at school. Ms. Britsova typically attends and is available for a questions and answers. If you have something you would like to place on the agenda, please contact Sam Star, CSCA president at: president@csca.thecenterschool.net

SPS Equity and Race Advisory Committee
Seattle Public Schools is seeking unpaid volunteers from our ethnically, linguistically and culturally diverse communities to serve on the newly formed Equity and Race Advisory Committee, for terms of up to two years. The purpose of this committee is to advise Seattle Public Schools staff on issues of equity in education. The committee's work will include a periodic evaluation of – and input to – the District's ongoing equity activities and implementation of equity recommendations. The committee will meet once every month with the possibility of additional meetings on special issues after the start-up period. District staff will facilitate the meetings. Interested individuals should submit background information and reasons for their interest via email to bjruiz@seattleschools.org no later than Friday, Jan. 13, 2012. The full application is online here

Share Your Holidays
If you're got some resources to share during the holidays, consider helping with the Adopt-a-Family program. The wish list for this family, making the transition from a shelter to independent housing, is posted in the commons. If you sign up, Ms Storey will coordinate with Center School parent Janet Gryczan so we can avoid duplication. Any item, big or small, is very helpful! Please remember: the item must be new, unwrapped and brought to school by 15 December. For more information, contact Janet at jegryczan@msn.com, 206-784-1392, or 206-351-0627.

Young Critics Workshop
So what do you do after you see a great (or not so great show) with your Teen Tix pass? You sign up for the Young Critics Workshop and turn your opinions into some engaging prose about the event. From their website: "The Young Critics Workshop gives young writers (grades 11 and 12) the opportunity to explore arts journalism and criticism, meet and learn from professional critics and artists, and hone their critical writing skills in the company of peers. YCW is a challenging and rigorous writing course." The program starts in February and runs through May, meeting on Thursday evenings 5-7 pm. The class is mentored by working critics, and the whole thing is free. For more information look at the website or email teentix@seattle.gov and they'll send an application back to you. Deadline to submit is January 13, 2012.

Distant Early Warning -- 2012-12 School Year
Yes I know, we're not even halfway through the school year, but the district has announced that open enrollment for the 2012-13 year will run 27 February - 9 March 2012.

Do you have an idea for a BLAST article?
We want to know what you know, and we want to know what you need. Send us your specific content, or your ideas for content. If you have Blast content to get out this week - please submit it by Friday at 3 pm. The Blast goes out late Sunday night, and covers school life for the following week.

Things we like to know:
- School News, in and out of the building
- Opportunities for Center School students (volunteering, classes, performances, etc)
- Student, staff and faculty accomplishments beyond the school.
- And the ever-favorite "misc."

By now you've seen the motley collection of stuff that qualifies for the Blast -- if you've got something that fits that very elastic category, send it in. Make sure you tell me what's going on, where and when it's happening, and how to get in touch with the people involved, if participation is the goal. And let me know how long you think it should run.

To submit news, events, or calendar items to be included in the Blast, send an email with subject line "News" to submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net.
