12-18 December 2011 It's the last week before the holiday break -- of course the schedule is wonky. Remember, alongside the student matinees for "Seven Keys to Baldpate," the Center School drama students will be performing on Monday and Tuesday evenings for the rest of us (see below) -- if your student comes home giggling at George M. Cohan, come down and see what was so funny. sandi kurtz submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net sandik@drizzle.com 206-523-6553 Center School Connections The Center School - Center School Center School Community Association (aka PTSA) - CSCA Facebook - CSCA on Facebook CSCA Meeting Minutes - CSCA Minutes Center School Wish List - Wish List Report Volunteer Hours - tcshours@yahoo.com Remember, to unsubscribe to this newsletter, click on the link at the bottom of the page to get to the CSCA website. This is the absolute LAST CHANCE to sign up. We still need about 10 more kids to sign up. The ski bus would go on Fridays for 6 weeks beginning 13 January, leaving at 3:30 pm and returning at 10:30-11:00 pm. Bus only: $150; Bus and lift ticket: $330. Rentals are available for an additional cost. Please call me or email me by 12/16 if your student is interested in the ski bus on Fridays. If we don't have 30 kids signed up by Friday, there won't be a ski bus this year. Julie Vergeront, jvergeront@yahoo.com, 206-459-1862. Seven Keys to Baldpate from Molly Pritchard, Director The Center School Drama III production class presents "Seven Keys to Baldpate," by George M. Cohan. "Seven Keys to Baldpate" is a melodrama-thriller of the roaring twenties, full of double-crossing dames, crooked politicians, raving lunatics and no-good thugs, as well as a dime-store novelist trying to capture them all in print. It's an action-packed, high style drama complete with shots in the night, false identities, ghostly visitations, murder and love at first sight. Public performances of "Seven Keys to Baldpate" will take place on Monday 12 December and Tuesday 13 December at 7:30 pm in the Center House Theater on the lowest level of the Center House. Admission is free! CSCA December Meeting Curious about school events? Come to the Center School Community Association (CSCA) meeting on Tuesday 13 December from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the school. The CSCA is the Center School Parent-Teacher-Staff-Student Association (that's PTSSA). The monthly meetings are where new ideas get launched and ongoing projects check in, so if you're feeling that you don't really know what's happening in the school, this is a great place to check out. If you have something you would like to place on the agenda, please contact Sam Star, CSCA president at: president@csca.thecenterschool.net It's Like an Apple Pie for the Teacher Don't forget the Staff Appreciation Lunch this Friday (18 December) -- Peggy Morgan is the coordinator for this volunteer effort. Whether you've got the time to help at the event, or want to donated something tasty for the buffet table -- we're happy for it all. Contact Peggy at Pmorganxyz@comcast.net to raise your hand and help out. Coming Attractions and Past Accomplishments Help Wanted! The annual Alumni Brunch is coming up on Wednesday 4 January, right after we get back from the holiday break, so coordinator Jodi Itman is getting all her ducks in a row before the hiatus. The brunch is a chance for current Center School students to hear from recent grads on what real life is really like after high school -- we supply the calories and they supply the stories. Jodi needs some help with food and with logistics -- contact her at 206-353-7726 or email mamacloud@gmail.com if you can lend a hand or a fruit salad. Add This to January Calendar Seattle schools will be taking a three-hour early dismissal on Tuesday 24 January as part of a budget-balancing teacher furlough. Outside the Center School Share Your Holidays If you're got some resources to share during the holidays, consider helping with the Adopt-a-Family program. These families are making the transition from a shelter to independent housing -- they are literally starting from scratch, and so they need all kinds of things big and small. You can see the wish list here, or find it posted in the commons. Ms Storey will monitor the commons list to help avoid duplication, but if you have questions, contact Center School parent Janet Gryczan at jegryczan@msn.com, 206-784-1392, or 206-351-0627. Please remember: the item must be new, unwrapped and brought to school by 15 December. Thank you all so much for your willingness to share with others. EMP Workshops The Experience Music Project is running a series of Teen Artist Workshops over the winter break, including "DJing and Beatmaking," "Digital Film Making," and "Film Acting." For more information on their programs, look at their website, and heads-up on their workshops for the mid-winter break in February -- Rock Band, Singing and Songwriting, and Science Fiction & Fantasy writing. Ice Skating Most of the year, ice skating in Seattle is the purview of hockey players and figure skaters, but during the winter holidays everyone likes to slide around. This year there is skating at the Fisher Pavilion again, and an outdoor rink up at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill. Both rinks have skates available for rental, but it looks like the rink at Cal Anderson charges by the hour. Either way, hot chocolate is a nice way to finish your session. A Little Song, A Little Dance The 5th Avenue Theater is running musical theater classes for youth, including singing, dancing and scene study. They're open to a wide variety of experience, from neophyte to just this side of professional -- classes run Saturday mornings at Theater Puget Sound, starting mid-January. For more information, check their website. Free or Reduced Price Art Meany Hall at the University of Washington is offering free youth tickets to all their chamber music and President's Piano series events, in order to help families afford great music. You can get two free youth tickets (ages 5-17) with each regular price ticket purchased for the rest of the 2011-12 season -- mention the promotional code "PRELUDE" when you buy the ticket. Only available for phone (206-543-4880) and in-person orders (1313 NE 41st St.) No Critical Mass Unfortunately, the Teen Tix Young Critics program is on hiatus for this year -- they're hoping to bring it back with bells on for the 2012-13 year, but alas, this year we will be without opinions. Last, But Not Least Update Your French/English Phrase Book The French can be quite protective of their language, but that doesn't mean they aren't open to new terms. So the next time you're in line behind someone who can't seem to hang up their cell phone, you know exactly what to say. attachiant(e) - a combination of attachant (captivating, endearing) and the slang word chiant (bloody nuisance) to denote someone you cannot live with but cannot live without. bête seller - a particularly awful literary work that becomes an instant hit phonard – a pejorative term for someone who is glued to their mobile phone
