9-15 January 2012

Alongside all the other post-holiday sales, the Sunday Seattle Times this week had the big brown paper bag from Office Max, for 20% off almost everything they sell, including handheld electronics like that graphing calculator your kid forgot to take out of his pocket before he put his jacket in the wash. Just saying... And if you did a little work for the Center School recently, don't forget to send your hours in to TCS volunteer hours monitor, Madalyn Corbit at tcshours@yahoo.com, so you and the Center School get full credit for your fabulous contribution!

This Week at the Center School

The Regular Stuff
Homework Club meets after school Tuesday and Thursday.
Coffee with Ms Britsova Friday 10 am at the Center House Starbucks
Saturday School 14 January.

Coming Attractions and Past Accomplishments

Tasty Thanks!
Big thanks are due all around for last week's Alumni Brunch -- there were over 20 Center School graduates in attendance, telling a variety of stories about what comes next. Special recognition went to Jon Greenberg, Jose Murphy, and Wyn Pottinger-Levy, who have been part of the Center School faculty since the beginning. Jody Itman and her volunteers did a great job with food and logistics -- it was a lovely way to ease back into the school schedule.

Poetry Reading and Slam
Standing in the front
Looking out at everyone
Looking back at me
It's guaranteed that the poetry to be read by Center School students at Richard Hugo House (1634-11th Ave) on Thursday 19 January, 7-9 pm, will be much better than that doggerel haiku.

Planning Ahead
The district has scheduled open enrollment for the 2012-13 school year for 27 February-9 March, with school assignments posted by 16 April. If you know someone who is considering the Center School for their student, please encourage them to come to one of our evening Open House events (9 February and 1 March) as well as our student tours (15 February and 8 March). For more information, contact Ms. Britsova at oabritsova@seattleschools.org

Outside the Center School

Town Hall Talk Back
Seattle mayor Mike McGinn and representatives from various city departments are holding a town hall meeting Tuesday 10 January at the Queen Anne Community Center (1901 1st Avenue West), 5:30-8 pm. If you've got something to say, here's a chance to say it.

Looking to Get Into Business?
Students in Free Enterprise is looking for young entrepreneurs for their first ever Greater Seattle Business Plan Competition. After a four-round elimination, the winning team will receive the funds to promote and launch their new business. If you're interested in joining a team, or have a group already in place, check their website or email them at seattlesife@gmail.com. Deadline for applications is 1 February.

"Press 1 for Agree Strongly, Press 2 for Agree"
You may have participated in the recent Seattle Public Schools survey on leadership and priorities -- take a look at what you told them you thought. SPS hired Elway Research to administer a community survey last November examining what people think of the of the district and what they'd like to see in the future -- the results were presented at the 3 January school board meeting and are available here as well.

Plant a Tree, Plant Two
Friends of the Cedar River Watershed have several tree planting projects coming up in the next couple months -- if you need service learning hours, here's an opportunity. Upcoming dates include Maple Valley Saturday 14 January and Saturday 11 February, or Hobart Monday 16 January (MLK Day of Service) and Saturday 4 February. For more information, contact them at nisa@cedarriver.org or 206-297-8141.

Beyond High School

Register for the ACT
Registration deadline on Friday 13 January for test on Saturday 11 February. For more information, check their website, and be prepared -- the online registration form for the ACT is considerably longer than the SAT.

Last, But Not Least

Not Just For Boy Scouts
It's not enough to think about earthquakes and flooding -- there are a few unnatural disasters you need to prepare for as well. Check out this link to the Center for Disease Control on Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse.
