11 January 2012 I know this is a little earlier than usual, but we've got a last-minute opportunity for opera tickets (see below) and the news needed to get moving. Comments, questions, etc? Just ask... sandi kurtz submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net sandik@drizzle.com 206-523-6553 And More... Hey Hun! And you thought that opera was staid and boring -- we've got the King of the Huns and his conquering hordes, cunning Amazon warriors and a scheming Roman general in "Attilla," the next production at Seattle Opera. Come to dress rehearsal at McCaw Hall this Thursday 12 January for a low-price seat to high-class art. $8 gets you in the door -- get your ticket at the door by 6:40 pm for a 7 pm curtain. For more information contact Janet Gryczan at jegryczan@msn.com. Scholarships, the Ongoing Saga Check the latest memo from Center School college counselor Barbara Quintana, with all kinds of suggestions for financial assistance! What's WITS? What happens in school may stay in school, but once in awhile you can get a peek. Alongside many other local schools, the Center School has been lucky enough to participate in the Seattle Arts and Lectures "Writers in the Schools" program. WITS matches up professional writers from all disciplines with schools, then stands back and lets them figure out what comes next. Although you may not get to watch the process in action, you can eavesdrop on some of their reactions through the WITS blog, which includes postings generated thought classwork or individual perspectives on the whole messy thing. WITS is turning 25 this year, and is looking to contact alumni -- if you (or your student) have been a part of the program, send a note to wits@lectures.org and share your memories. Not Just for Fruit Ninja Microsoft's Kinect may be a super-popular gaming system, but lately it's been getting some excellent reviews for other uses, from physical therapy to movement analysis. So as part of its Minority Student Day program, the Blacks at Microsoft employee network will award an Xbox 360 and Kinect sensor to selected high school students attending their event Friday 10 February. To qualify, students must submit an essay on "How do you Kinect," along with their application, by Friday 27 January. For more information on the essay and on the event, check here. Do you have an idea for a BLAST article? We want to know what you know, and we want to know what you need. Send us your specific content, or your ideas for content. If you have Blast content to get out this week - please submit it by Friday at 3 pm. The Blast goes out late Sunday night, and covers school life for the following week. Things we like to know: - School News, in and out of the building - Opportunities for Center School students (volunteering, classes, performances, etc) - Student, staff and faculty accomplishments beyond the school. - And the ever-favorite "misc." By now you've seen the motley collection of stuff that qualifies for the Blast -- if you've got something that fits that very elastic category, send it in. Make sure you tell me what's going on, where and when it's happening, and how to get in touch with the people involved, if participation is the goal. And let me know how long you think it should run. To submit news, events, or calendar items to be included in the Blast, send an email with subject line "News" to submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net.
