This Week at the Center School The Regular Stuff Homework Club meets after school Tuesday and Thursday. Coffee with Ms Britsova Friday 10 am at the Center House Starbucks It's a four-day week, so Wednesday is a 1-3-5 day. Coming Attractions and Past Accomplishments It's What Everybody's Wearing This year's Dragonwear is ready for orders. Student designed and student sold, with proceeds going to the senior class. Show your school pride and order one here for each family member. T-Shirts and Hoodies available. Outside the Center School Walking Gently Through a Minefield Charter schools have been a volatile topic amongst Seattle parents, but here's a chance to hear a little bit about the possibility without too much noise. The League of Education Voters (a pro-charter group) has arranged a conference call (Wednesday 18 January, 11:30 am) with a group of California families whose children currently attend charter schools. Dinner and a Wrench The 5th Avenue Theater is opening up one of the technical rehearsals for the touring production of Oklahoma for kids interested in watching how theater comes together from the backstage perspective. $22 includes the tech rehearsal (31 January, 6-9 pm) pizza and a ticket to the show, from a seat in the audience. A Tribute to African American Pioneers in Media The Black Heritage Society of Washington State and the Museum of History and Industry are hosting a tribute program on 2 February, as part of Black History Month, featuring an awards ceremony and a panel discussion on African Americans in Pacific Northwest media. The event is scheduled for 7 pm, Thursday 2 February at MOHAI -- for more information, check their website. It's Your City Hall The Mayor's office is hosting a City Hall Open House (Saturday 28 January, 10 am) -- here's your chance to tour the facility, but more importantly, talk face to face with the people who actually run the city. Calling All Adventuregirls! Girls on Ice is a unique, free, wilderness science education program for high school girls. Each year a team of 9 teenage girls (15-18 y.o.) and 3 instructors spend 11 days exploring and learning about mountain glaciers and alpine landscapes through scientific field studies and artistic explorations with professional glaciologists, ecologists, mountaineers and artists. This year we are offering 2 expeditions! Girls on Ice North Cascades (July 29 to August 9) is the original expedition in Washington State. Open to all girls age 15-18 (yes, international girls can apply!) Girls on Ice Alaska (July 15-25) is a new expedition, geared toward Alaskan and Pacific Northwest girls. Applications are due 1 March 2012 -- for more information, check their website. Special Help for Special Needs The Seattle Public Schools is hosting a series of "Community Conversation" sessions with the directors of the English Language Learning and Special Education programs. The next meeting takes place on Thursday 19 January, 6 pm, at the Broadview-Thompson School (13052 Greenwood Ave. N.) For more information on the program, and a list of future meetings, check here. Last, But Not Least Beyond Flop Sweat Underneath their more noble goals, almost all actors secretly long to die on stage, prefereably something vivd and drawn out. If you've ever contemplated a swashbuckling adventure with a truly epic conclusion, come see fight director and teacher Geoffrey Alm demonstrate "50 Ways to Die on Stage," part of Seattle Public Theater's Behind the Scenes program, Sunday 29 January, 7 pm, at the Bathhouse Theater.
