25 January 2012 I know this seems very full for a mid-week message, but it's almost the end of the semester, and things need to get done. Events here are in chronological order -- just take a breath and scroll through the list. Comments, questions, etc? Just ask... sandi kurtz submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net sandik@drizzle.com 206-523-6553 A Revised Revision The official word is that the semester now finishes on Tuesday 31 January. But teachers are free to make their own deadlines, so don't assume that the paper that was due on Thursday is now due on Tuesday... And remember, there is school on Friday 27 January, the first of our snow make-up days. So What Do Girls Look Like? SIFF is running "Miss Representation," a new film about the differences between women's self image and their representation in the media. Check Moira Macdonald's review in the Seattle Times if you're interested -- the film runs through Thursday 26 January at the SIFF Cinema in the Northwest Rooms. Careers in the Arts Fair -- Music A career fair for budding musicians and others who want to work with them. Sponsored in part by The Vera Project, this is a chance to hear professionals in the arts talk about what they do and how they got there. Presenters include Ashley Graham, web developer of The Wig Fits All Heads: Ben London, Media Rights Manager at Hewlitt-Packard: Greg Williamson, owner of Greedtone Pedals and Kill Room Recording Studio; Monica Martinez, founder of Black Mamba Productions; and Natalie Walker, co-founder and director of Rain City Rock Camp for Girls. Takes place Saturday 28 January 28th, 12:30 - 3:30 pm. at The Vera Project. For more information, email dustinf@theveraproject.org or call 206-956-8372. Poetry Slam, Redux This time, the haiku comes from the intrepid Jon Greenberg. The snow can't freeze words Some words need rescheduling How about Monday? The Poetry Slam has been rescheduled, for Monday 1 January. Same time (7 pm), same place (Richard Hugo House, 1634-11th Ave), same fabulous content (Center School students) Forget the Hanging Gardens of Babylon It's the Elevated Garden of Lower Queen Anne. Lower Queen Anne is getting a P-Patch, and the City of Seattle is offering unending Community Service Hours to Center School students with an interest in gardening, landscaping and environmental design, urban planning, etc! The P-Patch will be located on the roof of Mercer garage, literally steps from Center House (the big parking deck across from McCaw Hall). The next meeting is Tuesday 31 January, 6:30 pm at The Next Fifty space in the Center House on the third floor. For volunteer opportunities, contact Liz Clayton (206-795-7025, or southsideneighbors@gmail.com). LGBT Movie Night The Phinney Neighborhood Association is screening the award-winning local film, Put This On the Map, which features 26 queer youth sharing their thoughts and feelings about gender and sexuality. The showing is free to the public (donations still welcome) at the Phinney Neighborhood Center Brick Building, in the Community Hall (6615 Dayton Ave N) on Wednesday 1 February, 7-9 pm. For more information, take a look at the attractively designed flyer here. Calling All Volunteers Ms Britsova is putting out the personal appeal -- she really does need more parent/family involment in the upcoming School Improvement Plan meeting on Wednesday 1 February (1-3 pm). This is a chance to make sure that your concerns about the Center School are addressed as the school and the district does its long-term planning. If you have an opinion about the school structure, curriculum, or general environment (and who doesn't have an opinion about those things) and you have a little time to spare, please contact Ms Britsova at oabritsova@seattleschools.org, and sign on for the conversation. Winter Ball -- The Continuing Saga Same place (The Vera Project) and time (8-11:30 pm) but a rescheduled date (Saturday 4 February). Tickets are still $12 in advance (available 'on the balcony' at school) and $15 at the door, and it's still and Black and White theme. The organizers are still looking for donations of food and drink (bring them to the front desk at school) and this is still a fundraiser for the junior class -- if you can think of another question that we haven't covered here, contact Eva Cosgrove at evacosgrove@hotmail.com. And On the Right, Notice the Attractive Refrigerator Tour guides are needed for the upcoming open houses and new student tours -- if you like leading people around, this is your opportunity. Open houses run 6-8 pm. Thursdays, 9 February and 1 March. New student tours run 9-10 am, Wednesday 15 February and Thursday 8 March. For more information, or to step right up, contact Liz Wolk at lizwolk@comcast.net. And if you're a student looking for service credit, Ms Storey and the Student Senate need volunteers to "Leave It Better" and earn 10 community hours with a little tidying up around the school. Art needs hanging, tables need moving, old signs need removing -- that kind of thing. Seniors, remember that your completed service learning contracts are due on 2 April -- contact Ms Storey at kmstorey@seattleschools.org and log a few more hours A Holiday Thank-You Note from Janet Gryczan Donnetta Vessel at New Beginning's Broadview shelter wants Center School families to know just how much excitement, fun, delight, happiness and amazement that bundle of household goods and presents we delivered for Stephanie's family created! She described a tornado of paper and ribbon, squealing children and some happy tears. Thanks to everyone for your generosity! Do you have an idea for a BLAST article? We want to know what you know, and we want to know what you need. Send us your specific content, or your ideas for content. If you have Blast content to get out this week - please submit it by Friday at 3 pm. The Blast goes out late Sunday night, and covers school life for the following week. Things we like to know: - School News, in and out of the building - Opportunities for Center School students (volunteering, classes, performances, etc) - Student, staff and faculty accomplishments beyond the school. - And the ever-favorite "misc." By now you've seen the motley collection of stuff that qualifies for the Blast -- if you've got something that fits that very elastic category, send it in. Make sure you tell me what's going on, where and when it's happening, and how to get in touch with the people involved, if participation is the goal. And let me know how long you think it should run. To submit news, events, or calendar items to be included in the Blast, send an email with subject line "News" to submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net.
