It's a long Blast this week, with a little bit of many different things. But there's something fun at the end, if you need an incentive.

Center School Enrichment Fee News
Thank you to the the 98 families who pledged to pay over $14,600 towards our $30,000 goal. Great work! We are still looking for a 100% Center School family response. If you have not responded, please pull the enrichment fee form out of the pile and turn it in to the front desk at the school ASAP! Every dollar of the enrichment fees collected is programmed for materials and services which benefit every student at our school. You can pay the full $150 now, set up a payment plan as you elect, or pay what you can afford. Questions? Contact Sam Star, CSCA president, president@csca.thecenterschool.net

This Week at the Center School

Pizza Alert
A reminder about the CSCA Pizza-and-a-Bakesale event, this Thursday October 6, at 6 pm at the Center School. Meet other families, eat the almost-perfect food, and buy something sweet for a good cause (fewer calories that way). For more information contact Jessica Wesch or check out the spiffy flyer at 926-103 - pizza party.doc.

Coming Attractions and Past Accomplishments

Cameron Clapp Speaks at Center School
Triple amputee Cameron Clapp was the featured speaker at last week's Community Meeting, offering himself as an example of what can go wrong when students make poor choices -- Clapp was injured by a train when he was passed out drunk on the tracks as a 15 year old. Now 25, Clapp has worked tirelessly to regain his mobility and is currently training to participate in the triathalon. Center School students watched film of his early struggles with his microprocessor-controlled protheses and heard about his efforts to help other kids make better choices. For more information on his talk, check here SPS coverage or look here cameron clapp.jpg

Meet/Greet/Eat at the CSCA
Center School Community Assocation (CSCA) meeting, Tuesday, October 11th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the school. CSCA is the name for the Center School's Parent Teacher Association (PTA). We meet monthly on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the school. Please join us! At most meetings Ms. Britsova will join us and provide a brief update about how things are going at the school. If you have something that you would like to talk about at an upcoming meeting, please contact Sam Star, CSCA president at president@csca.thecenterschool.net

Outside the Center School

Beyond the Books
from Marty Hendley, CSCA board member and ace librarian
If you lose your home internet connection you can always keep up with what's happening at the Center School by accessing your e-mail or the CSCA website for free from your friendly neighborhood library. Seattle Public Library offers lots of computers with up to an hour and a half of free internet access per day, not to mention the free wi-fi connection!

Yoga From Scratch
Be Luminous Yoga is offering an autumn version of their successful summer beginning yoga program for teen girls in South Lake Union. Classes run Mondays and Thursdays (3:30-4:45), October 3-November 17 -- for more information, call 206-682-9642 or check out their website Be luminous Yoga

Serving Salmon
No, we're not talking about meal preparation -- it's a service learning opportunity with the Friends of the Cedar River Watershed to help restore wildlife habitat and see spawning salmon. Saturday 8 October, at the King County Parks Cavanaugh Pond Natural Area in Renton -- plant a tree and visit former restoration areas. Other projects coming up in October in Renton and Maple Valley. For more information, or to volunteer, contact the Friends at 206-297-8141 or check out their website at Friends of the Cedar River

Running or Watching
Come out and "Run the Bluff" on Sunday 9 October in the first hope-to-be annual 12K/5K fun run and walk, or if you're not a runner, cheer for the people who are. The Magnolia neighborhood is sponsoring this inaugural event, and is looking for runners to, well, run, and voluteers to serve as route monitors. Originally a fundraiser for Successful Schools in Action, any profits from the race will instead be donated directly to the former SSIA schools, including the Center School. The event starts at 6:30 am and ends around 11. Volunteers must be over 18, but kids can run at any age (and could get PE credit for it too -- I'm just saying). For more information contact marty@magnoliachiropracticcare.com or check their website at Run the Bluff

Cold Calling for a Good Cause
The biologists say we replace every cell in our body every seven years, and in Seattle we vote on the Family and Education Levy in a seven year cycle as well. Ballots are delivered October 19, and now that we are an all-mail-in electorate, some families might need reminding to fill out their preferences and drop it in the mail. The League of Education Votes is looking for people to work the phone banks down in South Lake Union -- if you and your family are in favor of this measure, this could be a great way to do good and earn some service learning hours. For more information look at the pretty flyer here families education phone bank flyer.pdf or contact Kerry Cooley-Stroum Source kcs@seanet.com or Steve Jones familiesanded@gmail.com .

School Buildings, and What Goes in Them
The district needs volunteers for their new "Integrated Facilities and Capacity Management Advisory Committee" as it begins short and long-term planning for district facilities. They're looking for people with some expertise and/or significant interest in planning, and they'll be working with district staff on issues including demographics, capital improvements and special instructional programs. For more information on the committee, and directions on applying, click here Community volunteers sought for Integrated Facilities and Capacity Management Advisory Committee.

Life Beyond High School

Fall 2011 College Fairs!
from Barbara Quintana, Center School College Counselor
Students who are interested in furthering their education in artistic endeavors are also encouraged to attend the NACAC Performing and Visual Arts College Fair, October 24, at the Fisher Pavilion at Seattle Center, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. It is a great way though, for students, especially juniors and sophomores to start researching college options.
The NACAC National College Fair is coming again to Seattle in late fall, with representatives showing up from over 200 two-year and four-year colleges, universities and vocational programs from around the United States and other countries. This free event is a great way for students to find out about numerous schools all in one place. It will take place, Friday November 4, 9:00 a.m.-noon and Saturday November 5, noon-4:00 p.m. Location is at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in downtown Seattle. For details about both fairs go to: College Fairs Barbara Quintana, College/Career Center Specialist
