17-23 October 2011 Another long Blast. For those of you with limited time, just know that the stuff happening at school this week is always the first thing on the list. This week there are some special events in the "Beyond High School" section for seniors. And there are a couple cookies at the end. sandi kurtz submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net sandik@drizzle.com 206-523-6553 Center School Connections The Center School - http://www.centerschoolseattle.org/ Center School Community Association (aka PTA) - http://csca.thecenterschool.net/ Facebook - Center School on Facebook CSCA Meeting Minutes - CSCA Minutes Remember, to unsubscribe to this newsletter, click on the link at the bottom of the page to get to the CSCA website. This Week at the Center School Community Meeting Wednesday 19 October -- first period starts at 8:30, Community Meeting happens before second period. Coffee with the Boss No, not Bruce Springsteen, but the Center School Boss, aka "Oksana Britsova, your high school principal." Ms. Britsova is shifting her monthly coffee hour open meetings to a weekly basis, on Fridays at 10 am. So if you've got questions, bring them along to the Center House Starbucks and get some answers, along with a tasty beverage. Tea drinkers also welcome. Coming Attractions and Past Accomplishments So What Are They Doing At CSCA? Ever wonder what actually happens at all those meetings? Remember, you can always check the most recent minutes on the CSCA website CSCA Minutes I'll be putting this in the regular list of contacts at the top of the Blast each week, so click and learn. Past the PSAT from Karen Harmon, Center School counselor Last Wednesday, 55 juniors and 79 sophomores filed into the PSAT exam rooms early in the morning. And 3 hours later, they burst out into the bright sunshine, having done an incredible job on one of the first steps on the road to college. Bring on the SAT, they're ready! Individual score reports and interpretive materials will be returned by the College Board to the school principal in mid- December. Each student's test booklet will be returned to them with their scores. There will also be a School Summary Report for each class. Center School Ski Bus The Center School ski bus was on hiatus last year, but we have heard from students that they want the ski bus back! For that to happen, we need to have enough kids sign up. We don't have the exact costs yet, but the bus ride would cost about $135 for 6 weeks and the lift ticket would cost about $234 for 6 weeks. The Center School Ski Bus has traditionally been on a Wednesday, leaving school about 3 and returning to school about 9:30 pm. Please email Julie Vergeront, jvergeront@yahoo.com if your student is interested. If we have enough interest, we will nail down the costs and send out forms. Ready For A Night Out? The CSCA is looking for a few volunteers who would like to help put together our annual Night at the Theater, a little bit of fundraising and a lot of great drama, not to mention an evening out with friends. Last year's night at Book-It's production of "Great Expectations" was a huge success -- this year is sure to be another hit. If you're interested in working on the project, contact Jessica Wesch, our volunteer coordinator, at jesamama@yahoo.com. Parent Volunteer Hours – Reminder! If you volunteered for the Center School, from stuffing envelopes to tutoring kids, and anything in-between, don't forget to advise TCS volunteer hours monitor, Madalyn Corbit at tcshours@yahoo.com of your hours, so you and the Center School get full credit for your fabulous contribution! And if you're finding yourself with some free time you could give to the school, contact our Volunteer Coordinator Jessica Wesch at jesamama@yahoo.com, and let her know you're available! Outside the Center School How We Treat Each Other There has been a veritable avalanche of research and writing on bullying and harassment, and the kind of work we can all do to make schools and other communities into more welcoming and supportive environments. As part of that endeavor, McClure Middle School is screening the film "Finding Kind," a project of the Kind Campaign to foster changes in how young women think of themselves, and treat each other. Check out the film here Finding Kind or here (link to poster), or just come to the screening Wednesday 26 October, 7:30 pm at McClure (1915 -1st Ave. W.) Special Education Conference Seattle Public Schools and the Seattle PTSA are presenting "Student-Centered Collaboration: Strategies for Effective IEP Teams" on Saturday 29 October, 8:30 am - 2:30 pm. If you have a child in the Seattle schools with an IEP, or work with special populations, this will be a great opportunity to network with other families and hone your advocacy skills. The conference includes a panel discussion and workshops on creating a team with other professionals and families to support special needs students. The event is free, and will be held at the John Stanford Center (2445 3rd Ave S.) -- for more information, or to RSVP, contact seattlespedptsa@gmail.com. Healthy Hearts As part of its commitment to making our schools and community safer, Seattle Public Schools is partnering with the Nick of Time Foundation to host free youth heart screenings for ALL Seattle youth on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, 9 am - 4 pm, at Nathan Hale High School (10750 30th Ave NE). All students between the ages of 14-24 years are eligible for a screening, regardless of enrollment status. The test is painless and takes about 25 minutes. Athletes especially are encouraged to sign up for a cardiac screening. Nick of Time Foundation and their partners, UW Medicine and Seattle Children's Hospital, offer this important event to ensure the youth in your community are heart safe. More information is available online at www.nickoftimefoundation.org Need Help? Look Here! 826 Seattle is extending their successful all-ages, after-school tutoring program to include a high-school-only session. Drop-ins are welcome for one-on-one tutoring by the 826 mentors, in a wide variety of subjects (including SAT preparation). Sessions are free, students can register when they first visit. Session are held at the 826 headquarters (8414 Greenwood Ave. N.) - for more information, contact Alicia Craven at alicia@826seattle.org. Beyond High School College Reps Visiting On Tuesday 18 October, Center School will host representatives from Mitchell College (CT) and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising during lunchtime on the balcony. They will both be able to describe their schools, and talk about application logistics. Also on the 18th, the Gates Millennium Scholarship program is offering an informational workshop on their "good-through-graduation" scholarships, for use at any college or university. The workshop is hosted by the NELA Center for Student Success (309 - 23rd Ave at Jackson) from 4-5 pm. NELA will explain the application at this meeting and continue to support students as they complete the process. Come to the Fairs That is to say, college fairs. The NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling) sponsors a number of informational fairs in the area each year. Monday 24 October, 7-9 pm at the Fisher Pavilion is the National Performing and Visual Arts College Fair, with representatives from conservatory and art schools available who can answer your questions while they promote their institutions. But that is the warm-up act for the really big show, the NACAC National College Fair, Friday 4 November, 9 am - noon, and Saturday 5 November, noon - 4 pm. Over 200 institutions from the US and beyond participate, filling a sizable chunk of the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a shopping bag -- this is the motherload of full-color brochures. For more information" NACAC College Fair Visual and Performing Arts College Fair Bound for College? College Bound Scholarships Back when your student was in middle school you may have filled out a form for the College Bounds Scholarship Program, sponsored by Washington State. Well, it's time to use that resource. College Bound Scholarship Kick Off for the class of 2012 will be held Wednesday 26 October, from 1:30-4:30 at Seattle Community Colleges. (Wednesday is an early release day!) Please go to your counselor or Career & College Center Specialist to pick up a special release and find out which Seattle Community College to go to, or for more general information, check here: http://www.collegesuccessfoundation.org/collegebound Last, But Not Least Making Art From Sewage Most of the time the "1% For Art" projects that are made alongside publicly funded construction projects are as physical as the buildings themselves, but this time around it's all about the performance. Multi-discipline artist Stokely Towles is touring his new show "Stormwater: Life in the Gutter" as part of the opening of the new Brightwater Wastewater Treatment Plant -- yup, it's a performance about runoff. You know you have to see this. http://www.seattle.gov/arts/publicart/temporary_projects.asp Bag-Off! Every year, courtesy clerks from local grocery stores compete in the National Bag-Off, which is exactly what it sounds like -- a grocery bagging contest. Kroger (the national chain that owns Fred Meyer and QFC locally) is holding the district corporate championships this coming Saturday 22 October, 8 am at the University Village QFC. The winners from this round will travel to Las Vegas in February for the big event, the National Bag-Off. Like any activity that requires hand-eye coordination, it's fascinating to see people who are really good at bagging groceries, so come watch, and then maybe do the weekly shopping.
