CSCA Joins Seattle Council PTSA and State PTSA to Oppose I-1033 CSCA members voted to oppose I-1033 at the October 22 CSCA general meeting. Please read the Seattle Council PTSA’s statement below.
I-1033 caps the general fund and gives extra tax revenue to property owners. The coalition of PTAs and PTSAs in Seattle has endorsed a NO vote on this initiative. Our concerns: - Locking in budget cuts to K-12 education I-728’s student achievement/class size reduction funds were cut; teacher cost of living increases were suspended - Loss of revenue that could help kids Early education, higher education and health and human services would be cut - Delay in implementation of HB 2261 … And the rollout of an expanded definition of basic education that includes all-day kindergarten, smaller class sizes in K-2, and a sixth period in middle and high school so kids can meet university and employer requirements. These are not currently funded as basic education. - Remember: I-1033 does not directly apply to local school district levies; however, 72 percent of a school’s budget comes from the state’s general fund, and the amount districts can seek in local levies is tied to how much the state sends.
Where to find I-1033 on the Ballot The layout of the King County ballots puts I-1033 into the bottom, left-hand corner of the first page, immediately below the instructions. To help make sure it's clear, please the graphic below which shows the problem in the ballot design. Please let everyone know about this potential problem. King County is expected to vote big against I-1033, but not if they can’t find it on the ballot. Thursday, October 22 - 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. League of Education Voters, 2734 Westlake Ave. N., 98109 (in the Diamond Marina building) Please bring a cell phone, we have limited landlines. RSVP to heidi@seattlecouncilptsa.org More phone banks (same place): Monday, Oct 26, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday Oct 28, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Seeking Donations for "Come as a Celebrity" Dance Friday, October 30 The senior class is organizing the first dance of the year, which will be celebrity-themed. In order to make the dance as fun as possible, the senior class is asking for donations of ingredients for beverages as well as decorations. Here is a list of what we need: Grenadine syrup (about 1-2 bottles) Maraschino cherries (1 jar) Sprite (about 3 liters) Root beer (about 3 liters) Club soda (about 3 liters) Vanilla ice cream (2 tubs) fruit flavored syrup (assorted flavors) Whipped cream (3 cans) Half and half (1/2 gallon) Fresh fruit (assortment of oranges, bananas, berries) Ice Clear plastic glassware (about 150-200 cups) Old trophies or medals (used or new) Any extra decorations appropriate for a celebrity-themed dance Since we are making variations on Shirley Temples, root beer floats, and smoothies, it would be incredibly great if everybody can pitch in and provide what you can. Thank you so much for your support! This is going to be a great way to kick off the school year.

DISTRICT NEWS
COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS SSIA Collaborative Community Meetings to Discuss Old Hay School Thursday, October 29 - 6:30 to 8:00 pm Catharine Blaine Elementary Library, 2550 34th Ave. W. Successful Schools in Action will host two Collaborative Community Meetings to discuss Old Hay K-5 program options and a new name for the school.
With the recently released assignment plan and proposed attendance boundaries, the School District has announced the reopening of several schools, including the Old Hay school located on Boston Street, the location until this year of the SBOC.
This school will be renovated and reopened in 2011 as an Options School to help ease the overcrowding in our neighborhood schools. For the 2010-2011 school year, students will be bused and the program will be located in Lincoln High School.
Options schools typically offer unique programs and are all-city draws, with attendance preference given to a small, local geographic area. The District has proposed this school become a Montessori K-5 school, but they are asking for our feedback.
Please invite your friends and neighbors to attend. This is our opportunity to work together and provide input to the district on our newest neighborhood school. Hope to see you there!
