NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL Seniors Attend ACLU Conference On October 22nd, half of the senior class took part in the annual American Civil Liberties Union Conference, held on the Seattle Center campus at the Vera Project. Six of the students performed with Beverly Thompson’s GAP Theater group at the conference. Robin Baer, Roxanne Gordon, Leo Reich, Bronte Neel, Camille Kolodziejski and Grace Peterson acted in skits about students’ rights with technology at school*. We attended workshops on gender equality in education, government surveillance, immigrants’ rights and censorship, as well as presentations on detentions at Guantanamo Bay and Activism 101 (where we learned that hand-written letters work best when writing to senators). Center School seniors were already well versed in the basics of activism, and they demonstrated their savvy through their confidence and insightfulness in discussions. In fact, as Center School students were busy winning the lion’s share of the prizes in the civil liberties trivia contest, ACLU of WA communications director Doug Honnig leaned over and asked me, “So are most of the people making these really intelligent comments Center School students?” I was able to answer proudly, “Yes, they are.” - Molly Pritchard
VOLUNTEER AT TCS Senior Events Needs You! The Senior Event Coordinator seeks individuals to help support Senior Events for the Class of 2010. Join us at Senior Brunch, Senior-Junior Prom, Senior Celebration, Graduation, Graduation Reception and Grad Night. In the past, a junior parent has shadowed the Senior Event Coordinator to learn the ropes for the following year. Junior parents and students support and volunteer for Graduation and Graduation Reception, leaving senior parents free to enjoy the festivities. They also build good karma for their own senior year.
I have been doing this for two years now and it really is a lot of fun! If you are interested please contact Laura Burns at lbsupler@comcast.net or 206-935-6229.
