Workshop Day – Community Service

Wednesday, December 16

Center School students will spend the morning doing some sort of volunteering. We are currently gathering information on opportunities in the community.  Right now we have three confirmed opportunities for small groups of students, and one for between 10 and 100.

There are a number of things we would love parent help with:

1.      Contacts – people currently involved with organizations that could use a group of Center School Students on 12/16

2.      Contactors - parents interested in making emails and phone calls to find/connect organizations for 12/16. Some teachers and students are/will be doing some of this as well.

3.      Day of help - parents interested in helping out on workshop day, accompanying students to workshops, etc.

4.      Coordination - a person who would like help plan/ coordinate the event.

Folks interested can contact Nathan Chipps at ngchipps@seattleschools.org. Thanks!

UPCOMING

Night Out at the Seattle Rep for TCS Community

Thursday, January 14, 2010 - SAVE THE DATE!

TCS students, family, and friends will have a wonderful opportunity to see the full dress rehearsal -- the night before opening -- of the Seattle Rep's production of "Speech and Debate." Directed by Andrea Allen (who works with TCS kids) and written by young playwright Stephen Karam, "Speech and Debate" is a completely modern, hilarious and heartbreaking look at the struggles of being a teen today. Tackling issues of politics, homosexuality, and self-expression, "Speech and Debate" is recommended for ages 14 and above, and is sure to trigger lively discussion among audience members.

This special evening for TCS community will start with hearty finger foods (pot-luck) and no-host bar at 6:00 p.m., followed by a short introduction to the play by Andrea Allen before the 7:30 curtain. The play runs for 90 minutes with no intermission.

Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults.

You can send a check to CSCA with the names of attendees and "Night at the Rep" on the envelope now to reserve your spots. More ticket info to come.

Thanks to the generosity of the Seattle Rep, all proceeds will go to TCS. Questions? Contact Sabrina Friend at (206) 783-5863 or sabrinafriend@yahoo.com

Needed:  Donations for TCS Science

TCS Science Department needs 35 solar powered simple calculators.  The TI-108 might be a good choice, but we aren’t picky.  The calculators we desire need only to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.  Solar is nice so that we won’t have to replace dead batteries.  But if any parent has a source of cheap non-solar calculators – that would be fine too.  The bottom line is that many students don’t have calculators and we only have about four to share.  We will be doing math related work all year and it is really slowing us down when students have to share calculators and while cell phones do have calculators, we would prefer not to go that route, since it usually leads to texting.

Also wanted:  An engraver to label equipment.  Maybe someone has one lying around?

Thanks!

-Britta Culbertson

PSAT Scores Are Back

PSAT scores were handed out to sophomores and juniors last week.  If you haven’t seen your student’s PSAT results, you may want to give them a gentle reminder.

VOLUNTEER AT TCS

Parent Volunteer Hours – Reminder!

ONLY 84 VOLUNTEER HOURS REPORTED SO FAR for 2009/2010

We know there are more volunteer hours than that!!! Don't forget to advise TCS volunteer hours monitor, Nancy Hom (skallywag@comcast.net) of your hours. She will record your time for our school. She also has forms she can send you to fill out electronically and email back, or you can handwrite your hours and turn in at school. Libby and Kathy have a clipboard in the CSCA mailbox with a volunteer hours log to enter hours manually.

Thanks,

Nancy Hom

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

SSIA Debate Club Tournament Seeks Volunteer Judges

Saturday, January 16 - 8:30 to 11:30 or noon

John Hay Elementary

My name is Sandy Nielsen, and I am the Debate Program Manager for Successful Schools in Action.  We are seeking volunteer judges for our tournament in January.  We will need 10 or 11 volunteer debate judges, since over 40 4th & 5th grade kids are participating in Debate Club this fall!

The Debate Club tournament will be held on Saturday, January 16th, from 8:30 to 11:30 or noon, at John Hay Elementary in Queen Anne.  In the tournament, teams of 4th & 5th graders will compete with other teams, all of them from Coe, Hay, Blaine, or Lawton.  Each judge evaluates only two teams in each of 2 rounds, with only those 4 kids’ family members observing.

We recruit judges from the parents of the debate participants as well as community and university members.  Orientation materials are sent via email, and there is a 1/2 hour training session for judges prior to the start time of the tournament.  Judges can be High School students or grown-ups, and the time qualifies for service hours.

Please help me recruit volunteer judges by posting the blurb below in newsletters and parent packets at your schools.  Contact me at sandynielsen@schoolsinaction.org with any questions.

Sincerely,

Sandy Nielsen

City of Seattle Seeks Proposals for Former Fun Forest

The City of Seattle, through its Seattle Center Department, invites proposals to temporarily activate all or some portion of 68,000 square feet of flat, paved outdoor space to be vacated by the Fun Forest, north of the Seattle Center Monorail station, for all or some portion of the time period between May 2010 and December 31, 2011.  Attractions, activities and events that will enliven the space are envisioned as ranging from single day to seasonal or even longer duration activities/events.  It is essential that the activation furthers Seattle Center’s mission to delight and inspire the spirit in each individual and bring together our rich and varied community.

Responses to the attached RFP must be submitted by 5 pm on January 18, 2010 to:  Neal Erickson, Seattle Center Redevelopment, 305 Harrison St., Room 109, Seattle, WA 98109 by 5:00 PM on January 18, 2010.

The RFP and any subsequent addenda or announcements are available at http://ebidexchange.com/seattle.  Registering for free at Ebidexchange.com will place you on the list for this RFP and ensure you get notified of any subsequent addenda or announcements.  Background information on Seattle Center’s Century 21 Master Plan and the Fun Forest area can be found at Seattle Center’s home page:  http://seattlecenter.com

INTERNSHIP & JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Washington State Senate Page Program

Each year, hundreds of middle and high school students take part in the State Senate’s page program.  Pages, a paid position, provide invaluable services to legislators and staff during the legislative session.  But, most importantly, they receive a hands-on civics lesson.

During their week of service, pages, who are 14 to 16 years of age, attend classes in the page school designed to teach students about state government and the legislative process.  They also listen to guest speakers, tour the buildings on the capital campus, and learn how to draft bills.

To find out more, visit:  http://www.leg.wa.gov/senate/administration/pageprogram/

You can contact Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles office to apply:  http://senatedemocrats.wa.gov/senators/kohlwelles/
