The District Councils are composed of community volunteers who represent various entities and interests that make valuable contributions to making each neighborhood vibrant and successful. DISTRICT NEWS Operations levy passes with 74 percent approval, capital levy also passes with 73.4 percent approval King County Elections released the official final results of the February 9 special election, which showed Seattle Public Schools' operations levy passed by 74.09 percent and the capital levy passed by 73.45 percent. With 130,498 ballots counted, official results show the three-year, $442.7 million operations levy won support with 96,492 votes and the $270 million six-year capital levy approved with 95,475 votes. The $442.7 million operations levy represents nearly one quarter of the District's general fund and pays for important educational services, including teachers and instructional assistants, full-day kindergarten, a sixth period at high school, and a variety of student activities. The $270 million capital levy funds projects that will benefit every school in the system and help ensure a safe, secure learning environment for every student. Repairs and upgrades will be made to roofs, life safety and mechanical systems; to science and computer facilities; and to technology systems and equipment that support teaching and learning. The levy also provides funds to make the necessary repairs to open five buildings to meet growing student enrollment and support the new attendance-area based student assignment plan. Save the Date: Annual Family and Community Engagement Symposium scheduled for April 24, 2010 Increasing authentic family and community engagement is one of the cornerstones of the District's five-year strategic plan, Excellence for All. Family and Community engagement happens at all levels – the classroom, the school and the District. Research shows that academic achievement increases as families increase the ways in which they engage with their children around learning. Seattle Public Schools has a deep commitment to supporting families as partners in the success of their students. At the first annual Family and Community Engagement Symposium in 2009, more than 300 family members learned practical ways to help students with math, literacy, college readiness and more. The April 24, 2010, symposium will feature Dr. Susan Enfield, Chief Academic Officer of Seattle Public Schools, as keynote speaker; and a wide array of workshops will be offered to provide information to families about strategies to support learning. The workshops in core subject areas will be integrated with information on supporting students who are English Language Learners, who need special education services, and who are candidates for advanced learning programs. The symposium is FREE for families and will be held at the John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence; interpreters will be available. More details will be provided soon. The Youth and Families Initiative is committed to eliminating racial disparities in key indicators such as education, child care, children’s health and the criminal justice system. The Youth and Families Initiative plans to hold up to 100 Community Caucuses around the city between March 22 and April 30. These caucuses are part of the city’s commitment to active involvement by Seattle’s diverse communities and neighborhoods, including communities of color and immigrant and refugee households. Community Caucuses are an opportunity for groups that want to make their voices heard to meet, with a facilitator, in living rooms, coffee shops, community centers—anywhere where people gather naturally. Each Community Caucus will elect one delegate to send on to the broader Kids and Families Congress on June 5 at Seattle Center. Learn more about the Seattle Youth and Families Initiative, and get involved by volunteering at a large group meeting or helping to put together a community caucus with your friends and neighbors.
