 15 June 2011

From the egg-on-my-face department, I offer an apology to Sharon Rutberg, whose name I misspelled in the Monday Blast.

Usually the Wednesday message is pretty brief, but there’s a lot of last minute, end of school year stuff coming through my inbox, and I wanted to get a head start.  So if you’ve got something you need to tell people, you’re in very good company.  Just send it along.

Comments, questions, etc?  Just ask…

Caffeine Emergency Averted

The plans for the Center House remodel have been tweaked, and the project will be done in stages.  They are still on line to start work this summer, and finish in time for the 50th anniversary of the World’s Fair next spring, but not all food vendors will be closed at the same time, and Starbucks will remain open throughout the project.  Because construction workers drink coffee too.

Do you have an idea for a BLAST article?

We want to know what you know, and we want to know what you need.  Send us your specific content, or your ideas for content.  If you have Blast content to get out this week - please submit it by Friday at 3 pm.

Things we like to know:

School News, in and out of the building

Opportunities for Center School students (volunteering, classes, performances, etc)

Student, staff and faculty accomplishments beyond the school.

And the ever-favorite "other stuff."

Coming Attractions and Past Accomplishments

CSCA Plans for 2011-12

from Sharon Ruthford

The CSCA held its last general meeting of the year.  The agenda included the election of next year's CSCA executive officers and a vote on next year's CSCA budget.  There was a quorum and the members present unanimously elected the following officers for next year:  President--Sam Star; Co-Vice Presidents--Pamela Pakker-Kozicki and Steve Havas; Treasurer--Aimee Bramble; Secretary--Marty Hendley.  Warm thanks were extended to outgoing President Paul Dieter and Treasurer Carol Wolf.  There were a few points of discussion in connection with the proposed budget.  First, at Principal Britsova's request, The CSCA will take over the collection and disbursement of funds collected at the beginning of the year to support academic programs.  Called the "activity fee" in years past, this requested amount will increase next year to $150 and will cover student planners, classroom materials, and a variety other other needs across many subject areas.  The amounts collected will make up a significant part of the revenue reflected in the CSCA budget, but will not take the place of other fundraising activities (e.g., the direct donation fundraiser or the spring house parties).

Second, a motion was made to increase a budget item slated to help fund .2 FTE of a science teacher. If the position were not funded, the school would be at risk of losing AP Biology for the coming year.  After extensive discussion and input from Ms. Britsova, the membership present voted unanimously to increase the amount allocated in the budget for the science teacher from $7,000 to $17,000.  This additional funding should ensure that AP Biology will be offered next year.  Depending upon the extent of CSCA fundraising next year, some of this amount may have to come from CSCA reserve funds.

There was also discussion with Ms. Britsova about the budget item allocated to fund a retreat at the beginning of the school year.  Ms. Britsova explained that an off-campus retreat of the kind envisioned can have benefits in terms of building community among the students and reducing the incident of bullying during the school year.

The membership present unanimously approved the proposed budget, as amended.

Volunteers were obtained to form a Financial Review Committee to review the books of the CSCA at the end of the fiscal year.  After that, the meeting was adjourned.

Recognition is Sweet

Special acknowledgments to Ms. Culbertson and Mr. Bell who received an award from World Affairs Council for being "Global Classroom Teacher Liaison" nominees. Britta and Andy are recognized for playing a vital role in advancing global education through professional networking and keeping their colleagues informed about recourses and opportunities. I will deliver the certificates to their classrooms this week. Thank you, Britta and Andy for being active participants in our community!
