CSCA 2010-2011 - BLAST | The Center School Newsletter 2010-2011
This issue of the Blast is heavy on first-of-year things, and the next couple will probably be similar.  Most of these listings will still be found on the CSCA website after they leave weekly rotation here, so if you need to find a detail, that’s the best place to look.

I’ve tried to group similar things together, but there are a few one-ers here as well.

Center School Families

First Meeting of the Community Building Committee (CBC) on September 15th

Join the CBC to connect with TCS families while making a difference for our community!  The CBC meets approximately once a month in the evening to plan how best to help support school functions and foster connections among parents, students and staff.  Join us at 7:00 on Monday, September 20 at Uptown Espresso in Belltown, 2504 4th Avenue (4th and Wall).    At the first meeting, we will discuss support for Curriculum Night  on September 30, an all school CSCA meeting and House Party on October 3, and Night Out at the Rep, a fund raising and community building event on November 11th.  Please call or email Julie Vergeront, jvergeront@yahoo.com, 206-459-1862 if you will be coming or if you are interested in helping with the CBC but can't make it that night.  Or, just show up at Uptown Espresso on September  20th. Whether you have a lot of time or just a few hours to spare, the CBC can use your help!

Directory Verification

Center School students come from all over the city, which makes communications between all of us even more important than it might be for a neighborhood school.  The CSCA will be producing a school directory for the 2010-11 year, and we need your cooperation to make it as comprehensive as possible. Your student(s) will be bringing home ‘verification forms,’ so that we can make sure we include the contact information that you’d like to share.  Please ask your student about the form, and return them to school as soon as you’ve checked them over -- hopefully in the next couple of days -- so that we can get the project into your hands soon!

Last, But Not Least

August Wilson Monologue Competition

Seattle High School Students are invited to participate in the First Annual August Wilson Monologue Competition to be held in October and November 2010 at the Seattle Repertory Theatre.  Students are asked to perform a 2-3 minute monologue of their choosing from one of the ten plays in August Wilson’s “Century Cycle.”  The selection can be a written speech or dialogue taken from one character.

A compilation of all of the monologues from all 10 plays written by August Wilson will be provided to all contestants The compilation offers teachers and students a guide to ease the process of selecting monologues of an appropriate length by category, production or character.

Preparatory Workshops will be held in October at the Seattle Repertory Theatre where Rep professionals will coach student actors and prepare them for the semi-finals.  Contestants will be judged by a panel of Seattle theatre artists on the basis of preparedness, understanding of the text, emotional connection to the material, and commitment to the performance.

All participants will receive an event t-shirt, while the top 3 monologues will receive, respectively, $500, $250, and $100 scholarships and the opportunity to receive a trip to New York City to compete in the National competition on Broadway, at the August Wilson Theatre.

For more information, or to sign up for a preparatory workshop, please contact Scott Koh at the Seattle Repertory Theatre (206) 443-2202 ext 1043 or via e-mail at scottk@seatterep.org
