CSCA 2010-2011 - BLAST | The Center School Newsletter 2010-2011

18 October 2010

Finally, a week with a normal schedule.  Or at least, the normal start and stop times for the day -- there’s a Community Meeting on Wednesday (see below), so those classes are even shorter than they usually are.

Other than that, it’s pretty sane this week, so take a breath, before Halloween descends.

Beyond the Center School

New grading policy in effect for middle and high school students

In October 2009, the Seattle School Board approved a new policy (D15.00, High School Credit and Grade Marking) that has implications in both middle and high school. Middle and high schools will now award grades on an 11-point scale with pluses and minuses, middle school students are now eligible to earn high school credit in some of their middle school courses, and advanced course work will now be weighted in determining class rank.  For more information go to:  http://www.seattleschools.org/area/instructserv/secondarygrading.xml

Registration for Driver Training Programs

Classes for Seattle Public Schools' after-school driver-training classes begin the week of Nov. 15. Registration will be held on the following dates:

• Nov. 2 – The Center School and Nathan Hale and West Seattle high schools

• Nov. 3 – Ballard, Franklin, Ingraham, Roosevelt and Chief Sealth high schools

The course fee for classes is $559. Counseling offices at all of the high schools have forms and information about times and room numbers. Call the Traffic Education Office at 252-4735 with your questions or visit www.seattleschools.org/area/trafficed/index.dxml

Exercising Our Franchise

I’m not sure, but I think that the combined Voters’ Pamphlets that came last week were the largest we’ve ever had here.  But you should make sure to check out page 45 in the King County edition of the guide, where the Seattle Public Schools levy, Proposition #1, is listed.  The Seattle Council of the PTSA has a short course on the levy, that you can download here:

Changes in Graduation Requirements Survey

Want to know what the state school board is thinking about changing?  Take the survey, look at the report “Graduation requirement survey, and links to proposed requirements and the report of the

Core 24 Implementation Task Force.”

Coffee with the Boss

Nov. 2, 8:10-9:10 am

Coffee chat with Superintendent. Goodloe-Johnson. A chance to get to know the superintendent, and ask questions.  North Beach Elementary, 9018 24th Ave. NW.

Last, But Not Least

Arts Crush

Theater Puget Sound, a fellow tenant of the Center House as well as a clearing house for information on performance events all over Seattle, is in the middle of Arts Crush, a month-long, multi-art festival with special rates for performances and exhibits.  Alas, the upcoming workshop by Seattle Opera techies on how to make stage blood is already full, but there are still two weeks of just-about-everything-else available.  Check them out here:
