Share Your Media Expertise

from Erin Katz

Do you work in the video, film, or photography industry?  Do you work for Adobe?  Are you interested in talking to students?  Ms. Katz, the film and photography teacher, is looking to make connections with parents who have expertise in these fields.  If you are interested, please e-mail her at erkatz@seattleschools.org.

If Only the Real UN Worked This Well

from Andy Bell

Model United Nations ("MUN") is representing Costa Rica at the National Model United Nations Conference in NYC March 6-12.  We have 14-16 students attending this conference.  The state conference is set for sometime in April (date TBD) and organizers are hoping to be on campus at the University of Washington again this year (the HUB is currently under construction and where the conference has been in the past).  There will be an interest meeting for WASMUN (the state conference) the Monday before Thanksgiving (11/22) at 8:30 in room 460.

Coach Ultimate Frisbee

The unofficial Center School Ultimate Frisbee team needs a coach, and are hoping to find someone with previous experience.   Currently this community based team meets Tuesdays and Thursdays after school in Memorial Stadium but could change the days if the coach needed a different day.  If you’re interested, contact Libby Simeon at easimeon@seattleschools.org or 206-252-9850

Nasal Alert

A renewed appeal for Kleenex – it’s just the beginning of cold and flu season, and we’ve already blown through half our yearly allotment.  If we don’t get some replacements, I’ll have to resort to even worse jokes.  Send a box in to the front desk with your student.

Heads Up for Ski Bus

from Janet Gryczan

Plans are in the works for this year’s ski/snowboard bus.  The bus to Snoqualmie Pass will run the first 6 Thursdays after winter break, starting on Jan 6th and running through Feb 10th. This year the cost will be $312 per student for bus and lift ticket. Students who have ski passes may sign up for a bus-only option for $132.  The Starline motor coach will leave from the usual location, the corner of 2nd and Taylor, next to the Children’s Theater, and return to the same location about 9:00 pm. Skis and boards may be brought and stored at school in the morning and will be locked up.  We are still considering options for the departure time.  We may ask students to get an early dismissal from their 6th period class, or we may leave directly after school.

What we need to make this work:

: Interest! We need a minimum of 40 kids to get this rate...

AND

: We only have room for 54--so sign up soon!

: A parent to drive their own vehicle to the slopes to act as our emergency driver each week. Drivers will be given a free lift ticket, and just need to be available to drive a student back to Seattle if necessary.

: A chaperone for the bus. This person also skis for free, will check students in and out, pass out lift tickets, and get to visit with our wonderful kids up and back! If you are interested in being a driver/chaperone for any or all of the season, contact me directly at jegryczan@msn.com.

Look for forms at the front desk starting next week, and Think Snow!

Financial Aid Forms Online

from Barbara Quintana

Attention Parents, Guardian and Graduating Seniors—Funds for Two and Four Year College!

Did you know that the 2011-1012 Federal Student Financial Aid Worksheet Applications are soon to be available on line?  Did you know that you can print off a worksheet, fill it in with your data and apply on-line?

If students need funds for college or technical courses, you may be eligible for either a grant (that you don’t have to pay back), work study (you work at the college part-time in return for help with tuition), a loan (at a better pay back percent level) or a combination of any of the above!

The earliest that you can apply is January 1st, 2011 but please apply for a student and parent or guardian PIN a few weeks before that.  It’s also recommended to have your 2010 taxes completed for those families that file.  The sooner the better as far as applying for federal financial aid as your chances are greater.

Even if you don’t think you can qualify for these funds, many scholarship sponsors require you to apply for this FAFSA money regardless, so keep these deadlines in mind.

Last, But Not Least

The Museum of History and Industry, which recently hosted exhibits on Women’s Sufferage in Washington State and the History of Espionage in the United States, takes on a more pop culture topic with The Purse and the Person, an examination of what women carry in their handbags.  It opens this Saturday and runs through February 14.

(no, I’m not making this up – go look)

Or you could just go see the new Harry Potter film, which opens this weekend.  After all, there’s only one more after this one!
