CSCA 2010-2011 - BLAST | The Center School Newsletter 2010-2011

3-7 January 2011

And we’re back!  I hope you had a great set of holidays, with some rest in there somewhere since it’s not even a month till the end of the semester.

I’ve had a couple of families ask to hear more from all of you about what your kids are doing in and out of school – performances, exhibits, and other kinds of accomplishments.  I can’t pass on what I don’t know, so look back at that letter you sent with your holiday cards and brag on your students a little.

Please make sure you read down to the “Outside” section in this issue of the Blast -- a Center School family needs our help after a terrifying event.

This Week at the Center School

MAP Testing, Continued

from Geraldine Carroll

9th GRADE MEASUREMENT OF ACADEMIC PROGRESS (MAP)

Seattle Public School’s MAP testing (Measurement of Academic Progress) continues this month for all 9th graders.  All 9th graders will be tested in Math and in Reading.  Please remember that this includes any student with 9th grade credits, even if that student is in her second year of high school.   If you are unsure of your child’s status, please check the Source, where you will find the grade level listed.

Testing is organized by students’ Humanities teachers (see schedule below) and will take place on the assigned mornings beginning at 8:00 A.M.  Please note this early time; it is necessary to provide enough time for students to complete the testing.  Be sure your student arrives on time and well fed.  In addition, speak to your student about the purpose of MAP—to determine how students are progressing in their math and reading skills as well as to guide teachers as they plan lessons.  If students understand the test’s purpose, they are more likely to try their best.

Your 9th grade student will test according to the following schedule, beginning at 8:00 A.M.:

This Week:

Tuesday, 1/4:  Ms. Pritchard’s Humanities AND Language Arts 9th graders—Math test

Thursday, 1/6:  Ms. Pritchard’s Humanities AND Language Arts 9th graders—Reading test

Friday, 1/7:  Make-up for students who did not complete their testing

Next Week:

Tuesday, 1/11:  Ms. Storey’s Humanities 9th graders—Math test

Thursday, 1/13:  Ms. Storey’s Humanities 9th graders—Reading test

Friday, 1/14:  Make-up for students who did not complete their testing

NOTE:  Parents, if it is possible for you to help us set up the testing—turning on computers and logging students in—we would greatly appreciate it!  You would arrive by 7:40 and be finished by 8:05.  If you are interested, please contact Gerardine Carroll at gpcarroll@seattleschools.org.  Thanks.

It’s not Football, it’s Futbol!

Center School Junior Melodie Paubert is looking for players to join F.C. Center -- the Center School co-rec soccer team.  Whether you’re a veteran player or totally new to the sport you’re welcome to join.

Practices will start sometime after mid-January, and are currently scheduled for Wednesdays at 4 pm, though that could change if the group wills it so.  Sign-up sheets will be posted at the front desk, and Melodie will call for the first, organizational meeting when the list gets to critical mass.   They’ll be starting with practice and scrimmage, but hope to field a large enough team to participate in the spring Co-Rec season.

Contact Melodie with any questions, from parents or students.

Community Family in Need!

from Audrey Kaplan

Do you have an empty truck and a strong back?  How about some extra storage space in West Seattle?  A talent for painting or carpentry?  A willingness to lend a hand to a community member in need?

The home of Ronni Peterson, mother of  Emily Hancock (class of 2013),  was destroyed in a tragic pre-holiday house fire last month.  While she has been blessed with a new place in West Seattle to rent quickly, the family still has a lot of cleaning up and fixing up to do.  Ronni would love to have help moving her salvageable furniture and other items (hence the truck and strong back request) to community member Julie Vergeront’s storage space in South Seattle. Thanks to Sabrina Friend’s call to Frogbox, she has access to boxes to pack things into.

The new rental is in the middle of a remodel.  Ronni is able to rent at a reduced rate because of this, however, could use community support in finishing a few projects requested by her new landlord.

If you can help in any way please contact Ronni at ronnip66@gmail.com.

Thank you!

New State Graduation Requirements for the Arts

from ArtsEd Washington

The State Board of Education approved by resolution the formal adoption of the provisional Washington State Graduation Requirements (WSGRs). Reflecting broad input gathered from around the state, the adopted WSGRs incorporate the addition of two arts credits. Washington is now the first state in the nation to require two credits in the arts as part of high school graduation requirements.

In referring to the adoption of the requirements, AnnRené Joseph, Arts Program Supervisor at OSPI, noted that "in its adoption of the new graduation requirements, the State Board of Education has demonstrated its strong vision for a complete education for all learners in our state"  Partners through out the state advocated for the arts and helped make these requirements a reality, in particular ArtsEd Washington, the Washington State Arts Commission, and the Washington State Arts Alliance collaborated extensively through out the process. To learn more about the Arts Credits and next steps, visit ArtsEd Washington's web site.
