14-20 March 2011 It’s a big week, with lots going on and a treat at the end. Your student might be taking the HSPE, presenting their research project in their QSR, or talking about their favorite novel in a Senior Book Chat. Whatever they’re up to, you know they’re looking forward to Friday -- not only is it a day off school, but it is officially Dance Anywhere Day. Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, it’s time to dance! http://www.danceanywhere.org/about (What, you thought I was making this up?) sandi kurtz submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net 206-523-6553 Remember, to unsubscribe to this newsletter, click on the link at the bottom of the page to get to the CSCA website.
This Week at the Center School HSPE You’ve sent in your reference books, you’re rounding up your snacks -- now it’s time for the actual test. You can find the schedule here, HSPE schedule for students who are taking the test, and students who are not. And for everyone, something to make us giggle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5P6omu01EDo
Senior Book Chat - or - Commentary on the Center School Best Seller List from Rick Monroe “I need volunteers to listen to book chats with a humanities teacher, providing the senior an audience. The humanities teacher will assist with scoring the book chat and parents needn’t have read the book.” He's still looking for: Tuesday: one for 8:30-9:00 two for 9:10-9:40 two for 9:50-10:20 three for 10:30-11:00 Thursday: one for 8:30-9:00 one for 9:10-9:40 two for 9:50-10:20 It would be helpful if a person could listen to two book chats. If you have the time to participate, contact Mr Monroe at rjmonroe@seattleschools.org For a sneak peek at the evaluation form, check here. Book Chat Evaluation Personal testimonial -- I did this last year, and had a blast. If your student is rising to their senior year, this is a great preview!

Coming Attractions
CSCA Meeting from Paul Dieter, our fearless leader We have another CSCA meeting coming up on March 16th. We hope everyone can attend as we have some exciting events to plan as we finish out the year, and a significant challenge as the school's budget has now been laid out and our help is needed more than ever. This is the time when we also start looking towards next year and anyone contemplating a role in CSCA in 2011/12 is encouraged to join in the planning. The current roster of CSCA leadership is heavily staffed with parents of Juniors and they will be stepping back next year to engage in all the activities parents of college bound students have come to anticipate. We have two house parties planned in May and big plans for helping position Arts Showcase as the flagship TCS event it deserves to be. Come to the meetings and join the fun. Any other agenda items can be emailed to csca@me.com. March 16th, 6 pm, social gathering (can be a great time to chat with Oksana), 6:30 - 8:30 pm, meeting, home of Margaret Chodos-Irvine, 3018 45th Ave. S.W.
Soon to be Seniors The Class of 2012 is looking for a few good parents. This year’s junior parents are getting ready for next year senior events. Please drop by our table at the QSR event April 13th, 2011 and learn more about the senior events in there student’s future. We need volunteers to help plan and participate in the next school year. Or you can contact Kip Kolodziejski at y_kolo@hotmail.com if you have any questions.
And Seniors Right Now Center School graduation day has been changed to Thursday, June 16th, 7pm, @ the Bagley Wright Theater (Seattle Rep). All the senior events planned for the day of graduation will all occur on the 16th. Remember that Friday, April 1 is the deadline to turn in all PE packets, community service hours and “High School and Beyond” forms. Not sure what you have left to get done? Check with Libby Simeon at the front desk.
Buff Up Your Dancing Shoes Friday, June 3rd is the date for the CSCA-sponsored Junior/Senior Prom. More information forthcoming...
Outside the Center School
Michael de Bell Explains It All For You Well, probably not all, but school board member Michael de Bell holds his monthly coffee and conversation meeting next Saturday 19 March, 9-11 am at Caffe Appasionato (4001 - 21st Ave. W, next to Fisherman's Terminal)
Not Your Average Puppet Show Pacific Northwest Ballet School presents their original production of "Pinocchio," with a substantial chunk of Center School students in many roles. Beyond High School Prom and the SAT: Heads up to Juniors and their Parents If you registered for the SAT on Saturday, June 5th, be aware that Prom is scheduled for Friday, June 4th. There is another SAT date that still has space available in Seattle on May 7th. It costs approximately $25 to change your test date. Based on the SAT website, it looks like the June 4th is the last SAT test date before October.
Last, But Not Least Rock-Em, Sock-Em Robots High school teams from the US and beyond (even as far as Ballard) compete with custom-built robots in an elimination tournament. Major fun for techies and non-geeks alike, and it’s free. Qwest Field Event Center 18-19 March, 9 am-4 pm.
No, Not That Nick Cave Between now and June 5, you must check out the Nick Cave installation at the Seattle Art Museum, “Meet Me at the Center of the Earth.” Cave’s astonishing Soundsuit costumes are like Mardi Gras meets Maurice Sendak -- they are incredible. The museum participates in the free First Thursday program and Teen Tix, as well as a Teen evening on the second Friday of the month, so there are plenty of inexpensive ways to get in the door. So go already! http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/exhibit/interactives/nickCave/index.html
And In Honor of the Week From the Word-a-Day listserv we have “sitzfleisch.” (SITZ-flaish, ZITS-) noun:1. The ability to sit through or tolerate something boring. 2. The ability to endure or persist in a task. ETYMOLOGY: [From German Sitzfleisch, from sitzen (to sit) + Fleisch (flesh). Earliest documented use: Before 1930. NOTES: Sitzfleisch is a fancy term for what's commonly known as chair glue: the ability to sit still and get through the task at hand. It's often the difference between, for example, an aspiring writer and a writer. Sometimes the word is used in the sense of the ability to sit out a problem -- ignore it long enough in the hope it will go away. USAGE: "Some prominent seats go to those with prominence. Others go to those with Sitzfleisch, like Representative Eliot L. Engel. Every year since 1989, the Bronx Democrat has won a prime spot at the State of the Union Address simply by showing up early and sitting in it." Elizabeth Kolbert; An Aisle Seat In the House or the Titanic; The New York Times; Jan 30, 1998.
