CSCA 2010-2011 - BLAST | The Center School Newsletter 2010-2011

4-10 April 2011

So they can close 405 from downtown Bellevue to Highway 520 to tear down an overpass, but they can’t fill the pothole in my neighborhood?

This Week at the Center School

The Countdown Continues

Third quarter ends on Friday 8 April, and even with the new math curriculum that still means that we’re heading toward the last quarter of the school year.  This might be a good time to look at the Source with your student.

Coming Attractions and Past Accomplishments

QSR Community Presentation Night - April 13th

from Rachel Zupke

Come join us Wednesday night, April 13th at 6:30 pm as this year's Chemistry students share their year-long science projects in a casual, community setting.  We look forward to seeing you in Conference Room A for great science, light snacks, and conversation with your wonderful Chemistry students.  If you are willing to donate snacks, finger-food desserts, or drinks, please contact Mrs. Zupke at rlzupke@seattleschools.org.

And If You’re Coming to the QSR Evening...

Seattle DOT is doing some work on Mercer Street at night, and will have up to three lanes closed near the intersection with 9th Ave. N.  They will always have at least one lane open for eastbound traffic, but this will make things considerably slower.

Next CSCA Meeting - April 14th

from Paul Dieter

This is shaping up to be an active meeting. Several parents have expressed interest in helping the CSCA be the best it can be. It has also come to our attention that some parents have just recently started receiving the Blast even though they signed up last fall. There seems to have been a couple different issues that lead to this and we apologize for our part(s). We are however glad to know you are now getting these communiqués of whit and wisdom.

Join us at Liz's home as the CSCA tackles the events that will take us through this school year. Party planning and Budget formation; it doesn't get any better than that.

Any added agenda items can be emailed to CSCA@me.com

Thursday April 14th 6 - 8:30

Liz Wolk's House, 3463 36th Ave. W.

SSIA Spring Break Workshops

Successful Schools in Action is partnering with a group of Center School students to offer workshops for middle school students during spring break.  You probably know a Center School kid who’s involved in teaching  one of these -- if you know of a middle schooler who needs something to do over the break so much the better!  Check here for details. Outside the Center School

Yes, I Know It’s a School Night

But the fundraiser for Seattle 826, the writing workshop that’s so fun kids don’t notice they’re working, is a very worthy cause, not to mention a great party.  This coming Wednesday, April 6, at the Vera Project, featuring Center School students and alums in Brite Futures (formerly Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head), Los Gentlemen and The Unibroz.  Here are many links to more information -- click on several.

Students and Parents, Red Alert-Beware!

from Barbara Quintana

Please beware of companies that say “Congratulations based on your academic achievement at school, you have been nominated for membership in The National Society of High School Scholars” or some such thing!  They go on to ask you for money so that you can be listed.  They also say that you can try for a scholarship!  You can try for a scholarship anyway without paying for a meaningless membership.  If the offer seems a little “funny” just bring the printed materials in to Ms. Quintana and I will have a look at it.  Also, never pay for listings of scholarships because you can get them for free!  Students and parents/guardians, please don’t get shammed! Barb Quintana

Last, But Not Least

Do The Hokey Pokey
