CSCA Meeting | 13 September 2011
CSCA 2011-2012 - CSCA Meeting Minutes 2011-2012
Attending: Sam Star(President) , Marty Hendley (Secretary) Pamela Pakker-Koziki, Steve Havas(Co-Vice Presidents) , Aimee Bramble(Treasurer), Maureen Kostiak, Irene Haddow, Paul Deiter, Cindy Deiter , Terry Blake, Peggy Morgan, Sharon Rutberg, Sandi Kurtz, Veronica Hildebrand, Clay Clayton , Liz Clayton, Janet Gryzcan, Eva Cosgrove (11th grade VP - student rep.) Liz Wolk, John Linse, Carole Linse, Rebecca Sadinsky, Julie Josund, Patrick Brady, Jessica Welch, Carol Clark, John Clark, Oksana Britsova.

The meeting was opened at 6:31 by Sam Star. This is the first meeting of the CSCA for 2011.
Handouts include Standing Orders (Bylaws), Budget and Balance Sheet.

Introductions were made with a great turnout of parents.

Budget:
Sam Star stated the budget was voted on at the June meeting of CSCA. We are already getting requests for funds from teachers. Mini grants are available ($3,000) for staff to supplement curriculum.

Balance Sheet:
As of June 30 total assets were 87 thousand dollars. Should there be a proposal not included in the budget (exceeding $1,000) it would require a vote of the membership. Up to $1,000 can be approved by the Executive Board.

Pamela stated that mini grants will be $1,500 per each ½ of the school year. She and Steve will be administering but they need others to help review requests. Paul Deiter volunteers. The deadline is the first Tuesday after the beginning of quarter in October. Grants must be applied for before spending money; there will be no reimbursements for money already spent. Amiee stated that a lot of our budget is contingent upon receipt of Enrichment fees and fundraising. Paul Deiter requested a detail of the budget for Senior Events from Amy.

Bylaws:
The current Bylaws (standing orders)  reflect 2009-2010 but remain the same. There are 26 standing rules. November meeting will offer a chance to propose changes to any standing rules, i.e. #22 re: students as honorary members of CSCA. There is much interest in having students more involved. Pam and Steve will talk to Mr. Bell and be at the ASB meeting to discuss student involvement. They might also go to the student body at large and look for those who want to be involved. Pam and Steve are chairing this group and others can go to them and bring ideas to the November meeting. Pam and Steve will get additional help from Oksana and Janet. Historically, any student involved in CSCA activities gets Community Service credit.

Oksana’s updates:

The school family pizza party will be held October 6th to expand community involvement. Oksana’s mission is to involve as many students as possible in event planning. Will give CSCA her electronic calendar with all dates and we can add to.

Paul Deiter asked if there has been any progress in bringing 10th grade science to lab ? This decision was postponed according to Oksana. Some background of this situation was given: 9th and 10th grade science is not considered a lab science so students must wait to Junior year for lab science. 12th grade has AP lab Biology. CSCA committed to fund AP Biology. $17,500 of our budget went to fund this, this year. One suggestion is to make 10th grade a lab science so AP biology could be a choice, and thus avoid CSCA having to pay for it every year. Paul asked if parents need to get involved to get the district to listen. Oksana will talk to her director about having a committee and then will need parent help. The 2 lab requirement is new to college requirements. This topic can have more discussion later.

All school team building will take place on campus next week. No classes. Attendance is mandatory. Center Mentor Program will be introduced on this day. Every Senior will pair up with another senior and have 4 freshmen to mentor. 10 and 11 graders will do another activity on team building.

Treasurer Report:

The current budget is currently very similar to balance sheet. At end of last year we spent 7 thousand on new software, also spent some money on the first day BBQ and a new version of Quickbooks. A more current report will be coming in October. Some Enrichment fee checks have been deposited (first round). CSCA forms were missing from some student packets, including the Enrichment fee form. 6 forms were included, or were supposed to be included. Sandi suggested that the BLAST run a reminder about forms. Tom will also put up on website so parents can download. Liz suggested that the forms need to be on both websites (school and CSCA). Sam suggests recopying and mailing them out USPS.

Liz Wolk: Fundraising Committee Report

5 major events are built into the budget to raise $42,650. Of that total, the enrichment fee is $30 thousand. Liz suggests we send snail mail to parents re: the Enrichment fee form, with weekly follow ups in the BLAST and a link to forms on both websites. Also should have the forms at Pizza event. In December we should do a wrap up and thank you and report what was raised. Irene Haddow suggested that the Enrichment Fee form is not clear enough about the fee being a voluntary fee. There was a discussion of how we follow up with parents on this matter and sensitivity to low income parents. Veronica Hildebrand suggested that next year we get the word out in June that this is coming up so parents are not hit with $150 fee out of the blue at the first of the year.

A Motion was made to get as many forms as can get in 44cent envelope and mail. MOTION PASSED.             Janet, Jessica, Sam and Liz and Julie volunteered to stuff envelopes.

ASB rep. Eva Cosgrove suggested that we think about auctioning off student art work at the end of year. Sam: Fundraising committee welcomes students and student’s ideas.

Liz mentioned that the Annual Appeal Letter needs to get done and out in October – to raise 7 thousand dollars. A suggestion was made to possibly hold off on this till spring and do it by class. Get the enrichment fee taken care of first. Sam: Let Fundraising Committee work out details.

CBC hasn’t decided if “Night at the Rep” will happen this year; it could be a “Night at Book-It”. The individual house parties will be consolidated into one “Warehouse Party”.

Sam made a call for helpers to assist the Fundraising Committee: Steve and Veronica volunteered.

Sam reported that The Mother Earth foundation gave $10,000 to Center. $5,000 will go to the Model UN, and the other 5 to Arts enrichment. Oksana and Sam will join the South Lake Union Chamber of Commerce… this could be a great resource for mentoring, internships and grants.

Sandi Kurtz called for all items of interest to be submitted to the BLAST

OKSANA stated that the WCMS website launches 11/1. Tom Wolf will need help to get the Center website up and running.

CSCA will meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Next meeting will be October 11.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm
