Seattle – Incoming kindergarten students and others who will be new to Seattle Public Schools for the 2012-2013 school year can get a jump on the enrollment process starting this week. Early enrollment is offered through Jan. 31, 2012.
Beginning Monday, Oct. 3 through Oct. 25, SPS enrollment facilitators will be at several Seattle Public Library locations and neighborhood community centers. Parents can also enroll their kindergarten students during Seattle Public Schools’ Family and Community Symposium on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Garfield High School, where interpreters will be provided.
Early enrollment allows families to avoid long lines during the busy spring and summer enrollment periods. While early enrollment does not impact where a student is assigned to school – under the new student assignment plan, assignment is based on the student’s home address – it is offered as a convenience to families, enabling them to get the enrollment paperwork completed ahead of time.
In addition, families who have students enrolling early – as well as existing students – will receive their school assignment notification in early 2012, prior to the Open Enrollment period in the spring. Students may apply to attend a different school of their choice during Open Enrollment.
Students who enroll during the Open Enrollment period will receive their school assignment notifications in late spring. For more information, visit http://bit.ly/EarlyEnrollment12-13. More information on the Oct. 15 Family Symposium can be found athttp://bit.ly/FamilySymposiumOct2011.

Officials of the National Achievement Scholarship Corporation named three students from Seattle Public Schools as Semifinalists in the 48th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program. The Seattle students share this recognition with around 1,600 scholastically talented Black American high school seniors nationwide who earned top scores on the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
These academically promising students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for about 800 National Achievement Scholarships, worth more than $2.4 million, that will be offered next spring. About 80 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win an Achievement Scholarship Award.
Listed below are the Semifinalists from Seattle Public Schools:
Olachi O. Oleru – Garfield High School
Alexandra N. Ricks – Franklin High School
William Spurr – Roosevelt High School

Seattle Public Schools will host three community meetings – Oct. 4, 6 and 11 – in an effort to share information and ask for feedback about the District’s Intermediate Term Capacity Management plan.
With enrollment trends indicating growth within Seattle Public Schools boundaries, the District implemented a task force of community volunteers and SPS staff, who collected and studied all available data relative to demographics and enrollment. Their work resulted in the decision to create and implement an Intermediate Term Capacity Management plan to cover the period of 2012-2016, prior to building schools as part of the Building Excellence IV (BEX IV) program.
The community meetings will be:
The meeting will include presentations by Seattle Public School Capital Projects and Planning staff members, followed by a question-and-answer period with community attendees. Comments from the community will be collected, recorded, considered and included in the District’s Intermediate Term Capacity Management planning process.
