Media Advisory: SPS to serve up locally grown food Wednesday as part of Taste Washington Day
Education News - SPS Office of Public Affairs
From Prosser baby carrots to Whidbey Island grass-fed beef hot dogs, Seattle Public Schools is recognizing Taste Washington Day this Wednesday, Sept. 28. The annual celebration of Washington-grown foods served in school meals is a partnership between the Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Farm-to-School program and the Washington School Nutrition Association.

The media is invited to Greenwood Elementary School at 11:15 a.m., at which time kindergarteners will be going through the lunch line for these local foods. In addition, Farmer Helen (Helen Walsh, dressed as a farmer) will be in the cafeteria handing out samples of fresh President Plums, direct from Luther Farms in Outlook and talking with students about the health benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables. Farmer Helen’s work is part of the district’s Harvest of the Month program, which is funded through a Seattle-King County Department of Health, Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW), grant.
